Problem - Client was happy with the size and pagination of their magazine
but together these were extremely wasteful on paper and had to be produced as
two sections. As the print run is in the millions, this has significant time
implications.
Information received - Client had two requirements that could not change - silk paper and 5th pantone colour throughout.
JPS Activity - A European gravure printer was sourced who could print in five colours both sides and also produce this as a single section. They had cylinders of the correct size to make this product a perfect fit to the press. After trials, they were happy to print on the silk paper sourced by JPS.
Benefits to Client
1. Faster production of a single section at a much lower unit cost, saving 25% of printing cost
2. One less section to bind (together with cover & order form), resulting in faster binding and a saving of 17% of binding cost
3. No paper waste, resulting in 24% saving of paper cost
Drawbacks to Client
The drawbacks are that the commitment to paper supply has a longer lead-time and adherence to image data to printer is more critical since gravure production schedules tend to be less flexible than web offset.
Result - Excellent savings to this blue chip client, when they are in a position to make timely decisions.
